Randy Severino of Bayonne became the center of an investigation last June, when police in Garfield notified surrounding jurisdictions of a white Honda Civic, involved in catalytic converter thefts, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said.
Secaucus Police Officer Jason Mitchell spotted the vehicle on Route 3 East traveling at speeds over 100 mile per hour, Miller said. The vehicle, which had been stolen out of Newark, failed to stop for police and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit was terminated once sight of the vehicle was lost in Jersey City.
A subsequent investigation found that Severino had stolen numerous catalytic converters from five businesses in Secaucus earlier that night, police said.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, Egan and Secaucus police Detective Sgt. Giacomo Sallustio, along with FBI agents, Bayonne police officers, and officials with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office served Severino with arrest warrants for the aforementioned crimes.
Severino got out of a Toyota Camry, later determined to have been stolen out of Jersey City near his home. Moments later Severino was seen leaving his home and after a brief foot pursuit, he was placed under arrest. At the time of his arrest, a loaded 9mm Taurus Millennium semi-automatic pistol was recovered from his person.
Severino was charged with multiple counts of theft, criminal mischief, eluding, receiving stolen property, weapon possession, and more. He was being held in the Hudson County Jail.
